Orbis Africa (Salt River, Cape Town)
Orbis Africa works with local partners to develop their capacity for accessible, high-quality, sustainable eye-health services for all, regardless of their ability to pay. They do this by developing infrastructure, providing training to local doctors, nurses and community members, and conducting outreach services. Africa is the continent with the highest prevalence of blindness with an estimated 4.8 million blind and 16.6 million people living with severe to moderate visual impairment.

75% suffer from conditions that treatable, curable or preventable. In 2016 Orbis globally trained 40 000 eye-care professionals to treat vision impairment. Their interventions improved more than 3.5 million lives. Learn more about Orbis Africa here.

Nando’s – Central Kitchen (Lorentzville, Johannesburg)

For centuries the people of Southeast Africa have used PERi-PERi to bring fire to their food. It is in Mozambique’s rich soil and blistering sunshine that the African Bird’s Eye Chilli grows into its fiery best. When Portuguese explorers arrived there, they were enchanted by its flavour. They added a squeeze of lemon and a kick of garlic and turned PERi-PERi into a very well-travelled spice. Which is how, many years later it ended up in Rosettenville, Johannesburg. One afternoon in 1987, two friends went for lunch at a humble Portuguese eatery.

As their meal drew to a close, they knew they’d tasted something that had to be shared. PERi-PERi was about to make one more journey – from Rosettenville to the world. Learn more about Nando’s here.

Big Eye was founded in 2006 to game-change the way brands engage their customers across Africa. Their work is big, bold and innovative.
