About the position
We are seeking a hands-on and experienced Workshop Manager for a busy tool and plant hire company. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all workshop activities, including the servicing, maintenance, repair, and readiness of a fleet of small tools, plant, and equipment. This is a critical leadership role requiring technical know-how, people management, and operational oversight to ensure optimal efficiency and equipment availability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the daily operations of the workshop and manage a team of technicians and fitters.
- Plan, schedule, and supervise all maintenance, servicing, and repairs of hire equipment (small tools, generators, compressors, rollers, etc.). With the focus on Diesel, 4 stroke and 2 stroke engines.
- Ensure all plant and tools are ready for hire, safe, and in excellent working condition.
- Conduct quality control inspections on equipment before dispatch and after return.
- Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, and stock control for parts and consumables.
- Implement and maintain workshop systems and procedures to improve productivity and turnaround times.
- Diagnose faults and provide technical support and hands-on repair work as needed.
- Liaise with the hire desk and operations teams to coordinate equipment availability.
- Enforce health and safety regulations and ensure all team members work safely and compliantly.
- Mentor and develop workshop staff through training and performance feedback.
Key Requirements:
- Proven experience (5+ years) in a workshop manager or senior technician role within the tool/plant hire or construction equipment industry.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., Diesel Mechanic, Plant Fitter, Mechanical Engineering) advantageous.
- Excellent people management and leadership skills.
- Organised, proactive, and able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Computer literacy for maintenance systems, record keeping, and communication.
- Valid driver's licence (Code 08 or higher preferred).
- Forklift licence or experience operating plant equipment is a plus.
