VSAT Technician at Sentech

About the position

Head-End Operations is looking for a Technician to form part of a small Technical team that
performs installation, maintenance and operation of the VSAT.

The prospective applicant should have the following:

? An appropriate S4/T4 diploma - Tech/Degree with a theoretical knowledge of electronics
and radio frequency technologies.

Experience as a technician in the following technologies:
? Appropriate operational experience in installation and maintenance of technologies or
willingness to be trained to install and maintain technologies not limited to the following:
? FM, TV transmitters and relevant test equipment
? DTT Transmitters and relevant equipment
? Audio distribution systems including STL equipment
? Satellite receiver equipment
? Antennas, R/F systems and circuits
? Video and audio distribution systems
? Digital compression/ encryption systems
? VSAT installations and commissioning
? Telemetry, computer and data radio systems
? High power transmitter maintenance experience
? Knowledge of audio and radio frequency signal measurements
? A code 08 (EB) drivers license

Job description

? Be prepared to perform Standby duties on a rotation basis and be available for call outs in
the events of emergencies.
? Be prepared to drive long distances and work long hours when required
? Be prepared to work away from home on regular basis
? Ability and willingness to climb masts of up to 300m
? Be self-motivated and take responsibility for his/her career development in Sentech.
? Be prepared to do FM, TV and RF competency tests as part of career progression.
The job responsibilities include the following:
? Maintain equipment and infrastructure on Sentech sites and client's premises
? Install equipment and infrastructure on Sentech sites and client's premises
? Maintain operational information and finance systems
? Produce technical reports when required
? Play an active role in the improvement of facilities, standards and development of systems
? Function as part of a technical team
? Take responsibility for the training, mentoring and coaching of other team members
? Perform standby duties as required by the OC.
Technical competencies required:

? RF Competency: Knowledge and understanding of modulation techniques; RF spectrum
and its applications; RF propagation; Radio regulations; RF test equipment and
measurements (including radio and TV); RF filters and Combiners and antennas. Ability to
interpret coverage maps.

? Maintenance competence: Knowledge and skill to perform preventative, opportunistic
and corrective maintenance on transmission, support equipment and infrastructure.
Innovate and improvise ways of maintaining and restoring services.

? Installation and commissioning competency: Knowledge and skill to perform
installation of equipment.

? Electrical competency: Knowledge and understanding of electrical infrastructure; battery
systems; standby systems; earthling systems; sub stations and high and low voltage
reticulation.

? Mechanical competency: Knowledge and understanding of the operation and control of
standby generators; heating and ventilation systems; air conditioning systems and fire
systems.

? Network Management Systems competency: Knowledge and understanding of network
elements / manage objects; Microsoft and Unix, programming; architecture and networking
(LAN, WAN, routers, switchers); different communication protocols; web technologies,
databases and network security.

? Network monitoring and configuration: Knowledge and understanding of
telecommunications and broadcasting technologies to effectively operate the network;
analysis of network; stakeholder communication; troubleshooting of multi-media
applications; ability to manage faults, configuration, performance, accounting and security
(FCAPS model).

? VSAT competency: Knowledge and skill to maintain and support VSAT networks and
transmission technologies.

? Satellite competency: Knowledge and skill to maintain and support satellite network and
transmission technologies.
