Job Description: Unit Manager - Theatre & Surgical Ward

Role Purpose
The Unit Manager for the Theatre and Surgical Ward will lead, coordinate, and oversee all nursing activities within the unit to ensure exceptional patient care, operational efficiency, and compliance with healthcare standards. This role requires a clinically experienced, ethical, and motivational leader who can drive quality outcomes while fostering a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
- Ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care aligned with clinical best practices and regulatory standards.
- Maintain strict compliance with patient safety protocols, risk management processes, and infection prevention principles.
- Oversee quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and corrective action plans.
Team Management & Staff Development
- Lead and support nursing staff through effective coaching, mentorship, and performance management.
- Manage staffing levels, duty rosters, and workforce planning to ensure optimal coverage.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of nursing professionals.
Operational & Financial Oversight
- Manage day-to-day operational activities within the Theatre and Surgical Ward.
- Ensure effective resource utilisation and cost management in line with budgetary guidelines.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
Governance & Compliance
- Uphold ethical nursing practices and ensure adherence to professional and organisational policies.
- Maintain compliance with SANC regulations, occupational health and safety requirements, and labour legislation.
- Drive documentation accuracy and maintain readiness for regulatory inspections.
Minimum Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Nursing.
- Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Relevant clinical experience in Theatre and/or Surgical Ward.
- Nursing leadership or management experience (private healthcare experience advantageous).
- Understanding of labour legislation and foundational business principles.
- Computer literacy (MS Office Suite essential).
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities with strong communication and organisational skills.
