About the position
A senior nursing opportunity is available in Pietermaritzburg for an experienced ICU leader to take responsibility for the clinical and operational management of a busy critical care unit. This role is suited to a confident nursing manager who can lead a team effectively while maintaining high standards of patient care, quality and clinical governance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the day-to-day clinical and operational functioning of the ICU/High Care unit.
- Provide strong clinical leadership and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality critical care.
- Supervise, support and develop the nursing team to maintain high levels of competency and performance.
- Coordinate staffing and ensure effective utilisation of human and clinical resources.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to nursing staff and address identified training and development needs.
- Monitor compliance with critical care nursing standards, hospital policies and professional requirements.
- Conduct and support clinical audits, quality improvement and risk management initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control standards.
- Monitor patient care outcomes and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Manage resources effectively and contribute to the efficient operation of the unit.
- Address staff, patient and operational concerns promptly and professionally.
- Work collaboratively with doctors and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Maintain accurate departmental records and documentation.
- Promote a positive, professional and patient-centred working environment.
Minimum Requirements:
- Registered Nurse with current SANC registration.
- Diploma in Critical Care or relevant critical care qualification.
- At least 3 years' experience in a nursing management role, preferably within an ICU/High Care environment.
- Strong ICU/critical care clinical experience, with sound clinical judgement and knowledge of critical care nursing standards.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, including staff supervision, mentoring and effective management of a nursing team.
- Experience in managing the day-to-day operational requirements of a busy ICU/High Care unit.
- Good understanding of quality improvement, clinical audits, risk management and infection prevention practices.
- Computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage resources effectively, work under pressure and make sound decisions within a critical care environment.
- Previous private hospital experience will be advantageous.
- Strong ability to build effective working relationships with nursing staff, doctors and other multidisciplinary stakeholders.
- Ability to maintain high standards of patient care while managing competing operational priorities.
