About the position

A leading South African financial services institution is seeking an experienced and results-driven Manager: Underwriting to lead its non-life insurance underwriting function. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a technically strong insurance professional who can drive underwriting excellence, optimise reinsurance structures, and deliver sustainable portfolio profitability.

Main Purpose of the Role

To oversee underwriting, reinsurance, policy administration, and portfolio management functions in order to achieve the organisation's financial and strategic objectives.

Key Focus Areas

  • Provide authoritative technical underwriting direction and ensure alignment with risk appetite
  • Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines, policy wordings, and governance standards
  • Monitor and improve profitability (loss ratio management, renewal strategy, claims trend analysis)
  • Structure and optimise reinsurance programmes; manage reinsurer relationships
  • Drive portfolio performance across outsourced and binder mandates
  • Lead product development initiatives and innovation frameworks
  • Manage departmental performance, financial controls, and people development

Minimum Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

  • Honours BCom in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, Risk Management or Insurance
  • 8-10 years' experience in Life and/or Short-Term Insurance underwriting
  • 8-10 years' experience working on insurance operating systems
  • Strong knowledge of reinsurance principles
  • Proven leadership and portfolio management capability
