Trauma Trained/Experienced Registered Nurse outlines the qualifications, skills, and responsibilities necessary for providing immediate, specialized, and life-saving care to critically injured patients. This role often exists within emergency departments, critical care units, or designated trauma centers. Job OverviewTrauma Nurses are vital members of the healthcare team, providing essential and timely medical assistance during critical situations.
They are responsible for the rapid assessment, stabilization, and optimal care of severely injured patients.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Patient Triage & Assessment: Rapidly assess and triage patients upon arrival to determine the severity of injuries and prioritize care.
- Emergency Interventions: Provide immediate and advanced life support interventions, including CPR, wound care, and administering emergency medications or fluids.
- Collaboration: Coordinate and collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary trauma team, including physicians, surgeons, and other medical staff.
- Monitoring & Documentation: Continuously monitor patient vital signs and condition, and maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all aspects of patient care in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Equipment Management: Ensure all medical equipment and instrumentation are functional and properly utilized.
- Patient & Family Support: Serve as a liaison between the care team and the patient/family, providing updates, education, and emotional support during highly stressful times.
- Safety & Compliance: Maintain a sterile and safe work environment, enforcing infection prevention protocols and complying with internal policies and relevant healthcare legislation.
Qualifications & Skills- Education:
- Education:
- A relevant nursing diploma or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license from the relevant nursing council (e.g., South African Nursing Council) is essential.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is essential.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certifications.
- A postgraduate diploma/degree in Trauma and Emergency Nursing Science may be preferred or required for senior roles.
- A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in an emergency or trauma settings
- Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and make quick decisions under pressure in a high-stress environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy objects.
