Job Description: Theatre Enrolled Nurse
Location: Private Healthcare Facility, Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa
Department: Theatre / Operating Room
Reporting to: Unit Manager / Theatre Manager
Overview: A leading private healthcare facility is seeking a skilled and dedicated Theatre Enrolled Nurse to support the delivery of safe, quality patient care within the operating theatre environment. The role involves assisting in surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile field, and ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery in line with organisational standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Provide direct nursing care to patients in the theatre environment in accordance with scope of practice
- Assist in preparing patients for surgical procedures (pre-operative care)
- Monitor patients' vital signs and condition throughout procedures under supervision
- Support post-operative patient recovery in the theatre or recovery room
Theatre Assistance
- Assist surgeons, anaesthetists, and registered nurses during surgical procedures
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field and surgical instruments
- Ensure correct surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and functioning
- Handle and account for surgical instruments and swabs according to protocol
Clinical Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards at all times
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical standards
- Ensure compliance with organisational policies, the Nursing Act, and SANC regulations
- Participate in patient safety initiatives and risk management processes
Administrative & Operational Support
- Accurately document patient care and theatre activities
- Assist in stock control, ordering, and cost-effective use of resources
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the theatre environment
- Participate in shift handovers and multidisciplinary team communication
Continuous Improvement
- Participate in in-service training and professional development
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the theatre unit
- Stay updated on best practices in perioperative nursing care
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Enrolled Nurse qualification
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Experience
- Proven experience in a theatre/operating room environment (preferred)
- Exposure to surgical procedures and sterile techniques
