About the position
We are looking for Theatre Anaesthetic Nurse for tempoary assigments which involves providing comprehensive support to the anaesthetist and patient throughout the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of care.
The role requires specific qualifications and a strong set of clinical and interpersonal skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Patient Care and Monitoring: Assist the anaesthetist during the induction and emergence from anaesthesia, monitoring the patient's vital signs (respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, cardiac rhythm), mental status, and overall condition.
- Equipment Management: Prepare, set up, and manage all necessary anaesthesia and ventilation equipment, monitors, and instruments, ensuring they are functional, safe, and sterile.
- Assistance with Procedures: Assist with the administration of anaesthesia, patient positioning on the operating table, and specialized procedures such as spinal/epidural anaesthesia and ultrasound-guided blocks.
- Documentation and Administration: Maintain accurate and complete documentation of all nursing care, patient status changes, specimen registers, and stock usage (charging/crediting appropriately).
- Environment Management: Ensure a therapeutic, clean, and safe working environment, adhering strictly to infection control and prevention protocols and relevant safety legislation.
- Team Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team including surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals, communicating effectively and anticipating the needs of the team.
- Risk Management: Implement strategies and protocols to reduce legal implications (e.g., informed consent verification) and manage potential risks to patient safety and security.
Education- Grade 12 (NQF level 4) qualification or equivalent.
Nursing Qualification
- Enrolled Nurse:
- Enrolled Nurse qualification.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Professional/Registered Nurse:
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing.
- Current SANC registration.
Experience
- 2-5 years of experience in a theatre environment.
- Experience must include anaesthetic and post-operative nursing duties.
Specialized Training (Advantageous / Required for Specialist Roles)
- A relevant 6- or 12-month post-basic Anaesthetic and Recovery Room short course, or
- A postgraduate diploma in Perioperative Nursing (highly advantageous and often required for specialist positions).
