About the position
Our client is seeking an experienced Technical Underwriter, preferably with a background in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering.
Insurance experience is essential, as we need someone who can hit the ground running.
The successful candidate will assess and evaluate risks related to engineering and renewable energy projects by analysing technical data,
project plans, and financial information to determine insurability and appropriate premiums. If you have a strong understanding of risk assessment,
underwriting guidelines, and market analysis within the engineering insurance sector, we would like to hear from you.
Minimum requirements:
- A degree or diploma in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical) is preferred.
- Experience in engineering environments and knowledge of construction regulations, building codes, and technical risk factors are essential.
- At least three to five years of engineering insurance underwriting experience.
- Short Term Insurance (NQF 4) Certificate.
- RE 5 / RE 1 Completed.
- Class of Business (COB) Training – Short-Term Insurance: Commercial Lines (required for technical/engineering underwriters).
Duties and responsibilities:
- Risk analysis:
- Analyse engineering project documentation, including blueprints, specifications, and risk assessments, to identify potential hazards and assess the insurability of the project.
- Technical evaluation:
- Evaluate the technical aspects of engineering projects, such as structural integrity, design specifications, and compliance with building codes and industry standards.
- Policy development:
- Develop underwriting policies, guidelines, and rating models for engineering insurance products, considering factors such as project type, location, and risk profile.
- Market research:
- Conduct market research and analysis to identify emerging risks and opportunities within the engineering insurance market, providing input for product development and pricing strategies.
- Client engagement:
- Interact with clients, brokers, and industry professionals to understand their insurance needs and provide tailored solutions and risk management advice.
- Documentation and reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions, policy terms, and client interactions, and prepare reports and presentations for senior management and regulatory authorities.
- Continuous learning:
- Stay abreast of industry developments, technological advancements, and regulatory changes affecting engineering insurance, participating in training programmes and professional development activities as needed.
