About the position
Our client, a leading power generation company, is seeking a skilled Technical Buyer / Estimator in Vereeniging to coordinate procurement, costing, and estimation activities. You will ensure timely, cost-effective acquisition of goods, services, and project materials, support project delivery and driving operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret engineering and fabrication drawings, datasheets, specifications, and scopes of work to determine material and component requirements.
- Prepare accurate cost estimates, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and procurement budgets.
- Source, evaluate, and qualify suppliers based on technical capability, quality standards, and delivery performance.
- Request and evaluate quotations, perform technical and commercial comparisons, and negotiate pricing and terms.
- Develop procurement plans and enforce compliance with internal policies, legal requirements, and QA/QC standards.
- Track procurement expenditures, material usage, and delivery schedules to ensure alignment with project budgets and timelines.
- Support project cost estimation, forecasting, cost variance analysis, and client invoicing reports.
- Maintain procurement records, update ERP/QMS systems, and assist with supplier evaluation processes.
- Support the integration of AI-assisted procurement automation (where applicable).
- Ensure supplier performance, contract integrity, and a balance between quality, cost-efficiency, and risk mitigation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the procurement function is strategic, responsive, and aligned with business needs.
Requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or related field (preferred).
- 5+ years' experience in technical procurement within fabrication, power generation, or heavy engineering.
- Strong understanding of mechanical components, fabrication drawings, and materials.
- Experience in cost estimation, budget control, and project procurement (beneficial).
- Knowledge of QA/QC documentation standards (advantageous).
- ERP/project management system experience (Sage, SAP, [URL Removed] MS Projects preferred).
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical, negotiation, and supplier management abilities.
- Commitment to accountability, ethical sourcing, and data-driven decision-making.
- Valid South African ID, Passport, and Driver's Licence, with willingness to travel locally.
