Tax Consultant
Location: Somerset West (Hybrid option available after 3-month probation)
Reports to: Tax Manager
Role Purpose
The Tax Consultant is a key member of the Tax & Cosec team, responsible for delivering accurate and timely tax compliance services to a diverse portfolio of SME clients. This includes preparation and submission of tax returns for companies, trusts, and individuals, while actively engaging with SARS and contributing to tax risk management, client communication, and process improvements. The role also offers growth opportunities in tax advisory and consulting over time.
Key Responsibilities
· SARS Compliance & Reporting
· Prepare and submit Corporate Income Tax (CIT), Provisional Tax, VAT, and PAYE returns for companies, trusts, and individuals.
· Calculate and review individual and corporate tax liabilities under the guidance of the Tax Manager.
· Ensure deadlines are met across a large and varied client portfolio.
· SARS Engagement & Dispute Resolution
· Handle SARS correspondence, including queries, audits, objections, and verifications.
· Represent clients during SARS engagements and support resolution of tax disputes
· Work with SARS and internal teams to resolve compliance matters efficiently.
· Process Improvement & Risk Management
· Maintain accurate tracking of tax submissions and compliance reporting.
· Assist in identifying inefficiencies and implementing workflow enhancements.
· Monitor and escalate compliance risks where necessary.
· Client & Internal Support
· Communicate tax deadlines and updates to clients and internal stakeholders.
· Provide support to the Tax Manager on tax planning, reviews, and audits.
· Contribute to the mentorship and development of junior tax staff.
Key Performance Indicators
· 100% compliance with SARS deadlines.
· High accuracy rate in tax submissions.
· Timely resolution of SARS-related queries and disputes.
· Contributions to process improvement initiatives.
· Strong internal and client feedback on service delivery.
Qualifications & Experience
· Bachelor's degree in Taxation, Accounting, or related field (e.g., BCom Tax/Accounting).
· 2-5 years of relevant tax compliance experience.
· Registered Tax Practitioner or working towards registration is advantageous.
· Experience managing SARS submissions across corporate, trust, and individual clients.
· Strong understanding of SARS eFiling processes and platforms.
· Knowledge of South African tax legislation: CIT, VAT, PAYE, provisional tax.
· Familiarity with Greatsoft or similar accounting/tax software is a plus.
· Proficiency in Excel and report preparation.
