About the position

Key Responsibilities

• Maintaining strict stacking disciplines according to clients shipping requirements and according to status of the units. Arranges stacks so that the FIFO principle can be applied.
• Separates containers suitable for specific commodities so that they are easily identified.

• Separates units of different statuses and stores containers by type and design where possible.

• Planning and coordinating with other departments, the movement of containers to specific worksites or stations within the depot for structural repairs, washing, pre-trip and reefer inspections and for surveys where applicable.

• Planning the selection of containers from stacks to meet the specific shipping needs of the client/customers and to meet sailing schedule/stack dates and deadlines.
• Controls the movement of traffic within the depot and release of containers to ensure no unacceptable delays are incurred.

• Ensuring the correct type of container as per release order or booking reference by the client is released to obviate the costly results of any mis-releases are incurred.

• Arranging and attending to placing of units for inspection by clients and surveyors at the appointed times.

• Keeping abreast of changing needs of clients and provides a high standard of quality to meet the approval of regulatory bodies such as Port authorities, Road ordinance, Control boards and Harbor pollution, etc.

• Monitoring both entry and exit gates and that security are posted accordingly.

• Ensures that the presence of all postings are done accordingly and that they vigil at all times.
• Recording all incoming and outgoing containers and personnel is done by security as per standard instructions.

• Security is compliant with aspect of service delivery to MSC Depots.

• Training the staff in the performance of their duties and ensuring that the staff have a clear understanding of what they must achieve and how they should achieve it.

• Planning and allocating workloads evenly and according to abilities.
• Supervising the activities of all his subordinates taking into consideration IR and company policies and the Labour Relations Act.
• Control variable expenditure within the yard operations

• Orders stock items pertinent to yard activities where applicable

• Ensuring that he complies with all aspects of safety in the workplace and that all staff wears the correct personal protective equipment as issued and signed for i.e. wearing of eye or hearing protection as applicable, etc.

• Follows organization standards in so far as hyster operators testing certification, sobriety, traffic flows, congestion hazards, toxic materials and general safety standards are complied with.

• Ensures serviceability of all handling equipment/Hyster fork trucks

• Keeping machines operational by ensuring regular servicing and preventative maintenance is done by the fleet maintenance staff. Carriers out regular inspections of the machines and ensures that the operators complete their checklist when starting up machines or coming on shift.
• Ensures that all the machines hour meters are working correctly.

Minimum Requirements

• 3 years Supervisory experience in a Depot environment is mandatory.
• 3 years people management experience
• 2 years of experience using MS Office
