About the position
Introduction
An international mining company is seeking an experienced Strata Control Officer who will report directly to the Geotechnical Engineer, the incumbent will be responsible for implementing the Strata Control function in their respective area of responsibility. In line with this, he/she will be responsible to monitor and manage adherence to geotechnical best practices, and timeously identify geotechnical hazards to ensure safe working conditions within his/her area of responsibility.
Note: Position is based in Northern Cape, Gamsberg
Duties & Responsibilities
- As the Strata Control Officer, the candidate will be responsible for liaising and interacting with Geotechnical Engineer, Geology, Drill and Blast, and the Planning departments to verify as built conditions vs design compliance.
- Report any deviations and ensure corrective action is implemented.
- Manage slope stability monitoring systems (GeoMos, Radar and GMS) and evaluate data collected on a daily basis and report any critical deformation observed.
- Define the geotechnical domains within the pit based on geotechnical conditions and update monthly Hazard maps.
- Daily pit inspections, regular geotechnical mapping and monitoring of drilling and loading operations in line with standards.
- Compiling of weekly Strata Control reports with regard to pit condition and hazards observed to ensure safe working conditions. Continuous coaching and training production personnel with regard to Geotechnical issues and hazards observed.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Minimum of a Grade 12 certificate
- Tertiary Education in Mining/Geology related field
- 3 to 5 years experience in the mining industry
- An open cast environment would be beneficial
- Chamber of Mines Accredited Strata Control Ticket.
- A driver's license is also required for this role.
- In addition to the above, a strong blasting background will be advantageous.
