About the position
An exciting opportunity available within the Retail / FMCG industry for a Stock Controller based in Elgin, Cape Town. The Stock Controller is responsible for managing and maintaining inventory levels across the retail store, restaurant, bakery, and multiple storerooms. The role ensures that stock is accurately recorded, efficiently stored, and effectively replenished to support business operations while minimizing waste and preventing stock shortages.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Stock Management & Inventory Control:
- Monitor and manage stock levels for all business areas, ensuring adequate supply without overstocking.
- Conduct regular stock counts, reconciliations, and audits to ensure accuracy in records.
- Implement and maintain an efficient stock rotation system to reduce wastage and ensure product freshness.
- Process stock adjustments, transfers, and returns as necessary.
- Track and report on stock variances, highlighting discrepancies and investigating causes.
- Ordering & Supplier Coordination:
- Place purchase orders based on demand forecasting and stock level analysis.
- Liaise with suppliers to ensure timely deliveries and address any stock issues.
- Verify received stock against orders, ensuring quality and quantity standards are met.
- Maintain good relationships with suppliers to optimize procurement processes and negotiate cost-effective deals.
- Storage & Organization:
- Ensure stock is stored appropriately in designated areas, following health, safety, and hygiene regulations.
- Maintain clear labeling and organization of storerooms for easy access and efficient stock retrieval.
- Implement FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out) stock rotation methods.
- Waste & Loss Prevention:
- Monitor and report on stock wastage and expired goods, identifying areas for improvement.
- Implement strategies to minimize loss through theft, damage, or mismanagement.
- Ensure accurate stock tracking using appropriate software and manual systems.
- Collaboration & Reporting:
- Work closely with department managers (retail, restaurant, bakery) to ensure stock availability aligns with business needs.
- Provide regular stock reports to management, highlighting trends and areas requiring attention.
- Assist in setting up and maintaining digital stock control systems.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Previous experience in a stock control, inventory management, or similar role, preferably in a retail or hospitality environment.
- Knowledge of stock management systems (e.g., SAP, Sage, or other POS/inventory software) is an advantage.
- Basic understanding of food handling and safety regulations (for perishable stock).
- Combination of office-based and hands-on stockroom work.
- May require early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts based on business needs.
- Some heavy lifting and movement of stock may be required.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Attention to detail and high accuracy in stock management.
- Ability to analyze stock data and make informed decisions.
- Good communication skills for supplier and internal team coordination.
- Proficiency in stock control software and Microsoft Excel.
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to handle discrepancies effectively.
- Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices for stock storage.
