Site Supervisor
Waste Management & Baling Operations
Location: Cornubia Industrial, KZN
Shift Pattern: Continental Shift (2 Days / 2 Nights / 2 Off)
Working Hours: 12-hour rotational shifts
OHS Appointment: Section 8(2)(i) Responsible Person
Role Overview
We are seeking a hands-on and experienced Shift Supervisor to oversee waste management and baling operations. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations during the assigned shift, while driving operational discipline, team performance, and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will be highly visible on the operational floor, leading from the front and ensuring adherence to safety, housekeeping, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with the OHS Act, site rules, and SOPs
- Enforce PPE usage, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and safe work practices
- Stop unsafe work and address hazards immediately
- Lead incident response, investigations, and reporting
- Maintain safe operation of machinery and equipment
Operations Management
- Coordinate all shift activities and manpower allocation
- Monitor production flow, baler performance, and waste movement
- Ensure smooth startup and shutdown procedures
- Minimise downtime and maintain operational efficiency
Gemba Leadership
- Actively manage from the floor through continuous observation and engagement
- Conduct regular floor walks and enforce standards
- Identify inefficiencies, unsafe behaviours, and improvement opportunities
- Drive operational excellence and consistency
People Management
- Supervise, coach, and develop shift employees
- Conduct toolbox talks and enforce discipline
- Promote teamwork and a strong safety culture
- Address unsafe behaviour and performance issues
Housekeeping & Waste Control
- Maintain high housekeeping standards across the site
- Ensure proper waste segregation and hazardous waste handling
- Keep walkways, exits, and operational areas clear and safe
Equipment & Safety Oversight
- Ensure all machinery safety systems are functional
- Verify guarding, emergency stops, and inspections
- Monitor forklift operations and safe equipment use
Emergency Response
- Lead evacuation and emergency procedures
- Coordinate first aid and emergency services if required
Reporting
- Complete shift reports, incident reports, and inspections
- Track downtime, near misses, and corrective actions
Minimum Requirements
- Proven supervisory experience in an industrial environment
- Waste management or recycling experience (advantageous)
- Strong knowledge of OHS principles and safety compliance
- Experience with incident investigation and risk management
- Strong leadership and decision-making ability
