About the position
A leading precious metals refining and heavy industrial company is looking for an experienced Site Electrical Engineer with strong experience in medium-voltage electrical infrastructure, 11 kV switching and reticulation systems to join their team in Germiston. The successful candidate will serve as the site subject-matter expert for electrical installations, with responsibility for plant electrical infrastructure, statutory compliance, electrical safety and operational reliability in a high-risk, continuous-process industrial environment.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and manage medium-voltage electrical installations.
- Support new and upgraded electrical infrastructure projects.
- Manage electrical, gas and water utilities.
- Control electrical equipment standards and specifications.
- Ensure machinery and electrical infrastructure comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
- Manage electrical safety, operational risk and audit readiness.
- Support energy-efficiency, solar PV and microgrid initiatives.
- Develop the switching capability of internal employees.
- Manage and maintain electrical distribution networks.
- Manage electrical protection systems and related infrastructure.
- Supervise machinery maintenance and electrical maintenance activities.
- Manage electrical contractors and relevant site personnel.
- Support plant availability, business continuity and safe restoration following electrical faults or failures.
- Participate in statutory, health, safety, environmental and ISO audits.
- Support electrical projects, shutdowns, new installations, upgrades and equipment replacement.
Requirements:
- Recognised electrical trade qualification with a completed Electrical Trade Test Certificate.
- Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) Factories (Electrical) – non-negotiable.
- Recognised electrical engineering qualification, preferably:
- BEng Electrical Engineering.
- BSc Electrical Engineering.
- BTech Electrical Engineering.
- Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
- National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, supported by substantial relevant experience.
- At least 5 years' practical experience with medium-voltage switching and reticulation systems.
- Proven, hands-on 11 kV switching experience, including personally performing, supervising or being formally authorised for 11 kV switching.
- Strong understanding of the operation, isolation, maintenance and protection of medium-voltage reticulation systems.
- Hands-on electrical maintenance experience within a heavy industrial plant.
- Experience maintaining and managing electrical distribution networks.
- Experience with electrical protection systems.
- Experience in machinery maintenance in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
- Experience working in continuous-process, high-production or high-risk industrial environments.
- Experience with electrical projects, including new installations, upgrades and equipment replacement.
- Practical knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable machinery regulations.
- Experience operating within a regulated health, safety and environmental environment.
- Experience managing electrical contractors.
- Experience with statutory machinery or electrical appointments, such as GMR 2(1), Assistant GMR 2(1) or comparable appointments, will be advantageous.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa will be advantageous.
- Installation Electrician or Master Installation Electrician certification will be advantageous.
- Experience with electrical protection coordination or relay settings will be advantageous.
- Experience with solar PV, microgrids or embedded-generation systems will be advantageous.
- Experience using ETAP or another electrical-network analysis package will be advantageous.
- Experience managing electrical utilities, consumption, demand or energy-efficiency initiatives will be advantageous.
- Must be willing to work in a site-based heavy industrial environment in Germiston.
