About the position

A well-established, market leader in the industrial equipment industry is looking for a Service Manager to join their Durban-based team. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to grow in a company that invests in their employees.

As the Service Manager you will manage and lead the service department, ensuring high levels of customer service, operational efficiency, and profitability. The role includes staff management, project oversight, customer liaison, and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Staff Leadership & Performance Management

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop the service team.
  • Foster a supportive and empowering team environment.
  • Ensure interdepartmental communication is effective.
  • Manage staff performance, including training and corrective actions.
  • Resolve employee disputes in line with company procedures.
  • Monitor and improve workflow and systems for efficiency.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.

Project Execution

  • Allocate and supervise service tasks, tracking progress.
  • Take ownership of customer issues and ensure resolution.
  • Develop service procedures and quality standards.
  • Oversee product dispatch and delivery timelines.
  • Engage directly with customers and gather feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of service interactions and resolutions.
  • Handle on-site customer and subcontractor disputes.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and apply best practices.
  • Provide expert advice to customers and team members.

Business Strategy, Planning & Budgeting

  • Develop and manage the departmental business plan and budget.
  • Optimize resource use to meet performance targets.
  • Monitor costs, analyse variances, and take corrective actions.
  • Advise management on opportunities and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Submit required reports on a regular basis.

Requirements

  • Trade Test Certificate in Diesel, Auto Electric, Forklift, or related fields.
  • Matric certificate.
  • 3-year tertiary qualification in a related field.
  • Qualification in Business or a related field (advantageous).
  • Proven experience in material handling service at a senior management level.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage both strategic and operational tasks.
  • Excellent staff management capabilities.
