About the position
Our client is seeking a professionally registered Senior Structural Engineer to join their Cape Town team. This permanent opportunity is suited to an experienced consulting engineer who can independently deliver structural projects, lead technical deliverables, support construction activities and provide guidance to junior engineering professionals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake structural investigations, assessments, analysis and design across a variety of projects.
- Develop safe, practical, economical and constructible structural solutions.
- Design reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, timber and other structural systems.
- Prepare and review calculations, design reports, specifications, drawings, schedules and technical documentation.
- Apply relevant SANS standards, regulations, project specifications and recognised engineering practices.
- Identify structural risks and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
- Manage structural engineering deliverables in accordance with project programme, budget and quality requirements.
- Coordinate structural design activities with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Attend project, client and site meetings, inspections and technical workshops.
- Provide technical input during tender and procurement processes.
- Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, method statements and technical queries.
- Conduct construction inspections and resolve structural issues arising on site.
- Respond to RFIs and provide technical clarification where site conditions differ from design assumptions.
- Provide technical mentorship and review the work of Graduate Engineers, Candidate Engineers, Technicians and junior staff.
- Participate in technical reviews and design verification processes.
- Maintain high standards of engineering quality and documentation.
- Build strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
- Support proposals, tenders, fee estimates and business development initiatives.
Requirements:
- BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer registration with ECSA (Pr Eng).
- Minimum 10 years' experience post-graduation in a consulting engineering environment.
- Proven experience managing structural engineering projects and technical deliverables.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary infrastructure, commercial, industrial, residential, mining or public-sector projects.
- Construction monitoring and site inspection experience.
- Strong technical leadership, project management and problem-solving capabilities.
- Experience mentoring and reviewing junior engineering staff.
- Proficiency in Robot, Tekla, Sumo or ETABS.
- Experience with Prokon.
- Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.
- Strong Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills.
- Code B driver's licence.
- No objection to security vetting.
Advantageous:
- MSc/MEng in Structural Engineering.
- Membership of SAICE, SAISC, IStructE-SA or another relevant professional association.
- Experience with EN design codes, ACC and digital workflows.
- Exposure to Dynamo or other parametric modelling software.
- Experience with JBCC or other forms of contract and project commercial management.
- Deltek experience.
- Experience applying AI within engineering workflows.
