About the position
A nationally significant scientific and technology-focused organisation supporting advanced research, engineering programmes, and large-scale infrastructure initiatives is seeking a highly experienced Senior Storage Engineer (Storage Infrastructure Specialist).
This environment supports complex, high-performance systems and large-scale data operations across multiple facilities and distributed platforms. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the resilience, scalability, and optimisation of enterprise storage environments supporting mission-critical workloads.
Role Overview
The successful incumbent will oversee the architecture, implementation, optimisation, and lifecycle management of enterprise storage platforms. This includes ensuring high availability, redundancy, security, and performance across physical and virtual storage environments.
The role requires deep technical expertise within high-performance or large-scale computing environments and the ability to contribute strategically to long-term infrastructure planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement and maintain enterprise storage infrastructure.
- Develop and contribute to long-term storage architecture strategies.
- Optimise performance, capacity planning, and storage utilisation.
- Implement redundancy and disaster recovery solutions.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement within storage platforms.
- Maintain detailed technical documentation and generate performance/utilisation reports.
- Monitor system health, reliability, and security posture.
- Support distributed computing and high-throughput environments.
Requirements (Qualifications and experience):
Qualifications:
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline
OR equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
- 6+ years relevant experience in storage system administration
- Experience within high-performance computing (HPC), research, engineering, or large-scale enterprise environments highly advantageous
- Experience in systems engineering combined with advanced system administration exposure will be considered
Technical Expertise Required
Storage & Infrastructure
- Deep knowledge of enterprise storage technologies (SAN, NAS, distributed and cloud storage)
- Storage protocols (FC, iSCSI, NFS, CIFS)
- Distributed storage platforms (e.g., Ceph, Lustre, MinIO or similar)
- Hardware infrastructure including servers and storage arrays
- Capacity planning and performance optimisation
Systems & Platforms
- Linux system installation, configuration and administration
- Multi-OS environments (Linux variants, Windows)
- Virtualisation and containerisation (OpenStack, Proxmox, Docker or similar)
Automation & DevOps
- Infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Puppet, Chef or similar)
- CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Buildbot or equivalent)
- Deployment automation frameworks
Monitoring & Security
- Distributed monitoring and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic or similar)
- Centralised logging (ELK stack or equivalent)
- Security best practices including intrusion detection and backup/recovery strategies
Development & Scripting
- Scripting (Python preferred)
- Working knowledge of C / C++ advantageous
- Database fundamentals (SQL or similar)
