About the position
Our client is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to take technical ownership of industrial and utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and hybrid PV+BESS projects across the full project lifecycle. This is a senior technical leadership role, requiring the ability to lead engineering execution, manage complex interfaces, engage directly with clients and suppliers, and drive projects through commissioning and final acceptance.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall technical ownership of BESS and hybrid energy projects from handover through commissioning, acceptance and close-out.
- Lead engineering execution strategies and internal technical handover processes.
- Review and validate project scope, technical assumptions, contractual obligations, performance guarantees and engineering requirements.
- Identify, assess and manage technical risks, deviations, design changes and project interfaces.
- Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary engineering teams and subject matter experts.
- Review, approve and manage engineering deliverables, including electrical designs, drawings, technical studies, cable plans, control architectures and communication systems.
- Ensure all engineering solutions meet contractual, performance, quality, safety and regulatory requirements.
- Lead technical coordination between battery suppliers, inverter manufacturers, EPC contractors, customers, utilities and third-party service providers.
- Review and challenge supplier calculations, designs, drawings and technical submissions.
- Oversee battery sizing, load profiles and performance requirements during project execution and application engineering.
- Lead technical discussions with battery manufacturers covering system design, technical agreements, warranties, FAT/SAT and performance guarantees.
- Define and approve FAT and SAT requirements and oversee technical testing and commissioning activities.
- Provide technical leadership around Power Plant Controllers, monitoring systems, communications, metering and Point of Interconnection requirements.
- Manage complex system integration and communication interfaces, including signal lists and integration architecture.
- Lead the resolution of technical issues during manufacturing, installation, commissioning and warranty periods.
- Participate in senior-level customer meetings, technical reviews, design workshops and contractual clarification discussions.
- Drive technical project close-out, including punch-list resolution, documentation and final acceptance.
- Support the development and standardisation of engineering methodologies, processes and technical standards.
- Contribute to the development of regional engineering capability and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
- Provide application engineering support when required, including system sizing and pre-construction design.
- Represent our client professionally with customers, suppliers, utilities, regulators and industry stakeholders.
- Travel extensively to project sites across Southern and East Africa.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum 6 - 8 years' relevant experience in Project Engineering, with strong exposure to Solar PV, BESS or hybrid energy systems.
- Proven experience taking technical ownership of complex BESS or renewable energy projects.
- Strong understanding of utility-scale BESS systems, electrical integration, controls, communications and grid interfaces.
- Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and complex technical interfaces.
- Strong knowledge of project execution, commissioning, FAT/SAT and technical acceptance processes.
- Experience engaging directly with clients, EPC contractors, OEMs, utilities and other senior stakeholders.
- Strong commercial and contractual awareness, with the ability to translate project requirements into executable engineering solutions.
- Excellent technical documentation, reporting and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong leadership, decision-making and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to travel frequently throughout Southern and East Africa.
