About the position
Introduction To develop and support suitable technology strategies, processes, standards, specifications and designs Duties & Responsibilities Desired Experience & Qualification BSc/B Eng in Engineering at NQF8 with 480 credits
1.1 Guiding technical employees to perform special investigations into technical problems experienced by customers.
1.2 Compiling discipline specific engineering instructions and bulletins for field implementation to mitigate developed technology risks.
1.3 Developing solutions to solve engineering problems and mitigate recurring problems. 1.4 Analysing equipment failures, unsafe incidents investigation results and making recommendations for rectification. 1.5 Validating engineer recommendations.
1.6 Applying technical expertise when conducting internal technical audits to assess compliance with standards.
2.1 Documenting user requirements and translating into solutions.
2.2 Evaluating and selecting appropriate solutions and design specifications.
2.3 Implementing and reviewing selected engineering solutions for projects.
2.4 Producing and signing off project specific design packages as the appropriate certified and experienced engineer with approved delegation of authority.
2.5 Providing engineering services during project implementation on site.
2.6 Reducing technical risks and improving product and system reliability.
2.7 Producing and integrating asset creation engineering solutions, designs on behalf of customers at various stages of the project life cycle
3.1 Identifying business operations performance risks and developing possible technical solutions.
3.2 Investigating the external environment for potential innovations.
3.3 Analysing innovation feasibility to determine suitability for development and adoption.
3.4 Identifying deficiencies in discipline specific philosophies, standards, procedures, specifications and work practices, existing standards, specifications according to business requirements.
3.5 Assessing existing specifications suitability and alternative design methodologies.
3.6 Evaluating new products for application based on parameters such as functionality, integrity, reliability, performance and advising SCOT regarding the implementation of suitable products.

3.8 Approving discipline specific technical document content prepared by engineers.
4.1 Developing strategic philosophies for the discipline comprising of operational and future perspectives.
4.2 Identifying core technology issues that require immediate attention and can be addressed by applying existing knowledge.
4.3 Identifying core technology issues to address gaps in the existing knowledge base which form the basis for Eskom research.
4.4 Identifying skills and capabilities required to sustain core technology within relevant timeframes.
4.5 Contributing to the development of a discipline specific vision.
5.1 Evaluating business technology research requirements to improve performance and safety.
5.2 Determining new technologies potential and risks.
5.3 Developing research criteria.
5.4 Compiling research questions and detailed proposals.
5.5 Determining the suitability and least disruptive way to apply researched technology in business operations.
5.6 Acting as research project leader for assigned research projects.
6.1 Liaising with suppliers regarding Eskom`s requirements and philosophies. 6.2 Providing technical input into procurement strategies and processes to establish development, supply and service contracts.
6.3 Supervising suppliers to develop relevant technical solutions to meet Eskom's requirements.
6.4 Analysing the risks and effects regarding the introduction of new solutions.
6.5 Deciding on implementation strategy and program for introducing new solutions.
6.6 Providing strategic and technical guidance for specific projects to the technical project leader.
7.1 Attending and presenting technical papers at national and international forums such as Council of Large Electric Systems (Cigre), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and other centres of excellence (CoE) specific forums.
7.2 Analysing the effects of international and national proposed standards and regulations on the business.
7.3 Liaising with the inspector of works or other relevant regulatory authority regarding unclear regulations.
7.4 Reporting to relevant technology forums regarding discipline specific research and progress status.
8.1 Mentoring and coaching junior professionals in the centres of excellence (CoEs) and operating units (OUs).
8.2 Identifying skills, training requirements and gaps based on existing and emerging technology developments.
8.3 Assessing training material for suitability of use.
8.4 Transferring skills, sapient and tacit knowledge to relevant engineering resources.
