About the position
We're seeking a Senior Plant Pathologist with strong field and laboratory research experience to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team in Mount Edgecombe, Durban. In this impactful role, you'll contribute to critical plant health research, help shape industry strategies, and support the sustainability of South Africa's crops and food systems.

Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Plant Virology, or Molecular Biology (Essential)
- 5+ years of hands-on field research and lab experience in plant disease management
- Strong knowledge of plant disease epidemiology and integrated management strategies
- Proficient in molecular tools (PCR, qPCR, sequencing) and data analysis/statistical software
- Computer literate
- Demonstrated leadership in project and team management
- Proven experience supervising postgraduate students (MSc and PhD), with a successful track record of degree completions
- Registration with SACNASP (Advantageous)
- AVCASA/CropLife certification (Advantageous)
- Experience working with viral pathogens, insect vectors, and bioinformatics tools
- Proven track record of scientific publications
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Valid driver's license and own vehicle
- South African residency required
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and lead lab, glasshouse, and field trials on plant diseases
- Investigate epidemiology and spread of plant pathogens
- Develop integrated disease management strategies for various crops
- Apply molecular diagnostics in research (PCR, qPCR, sequencing)
- Manage research projects
- Collaborate with in-house experts and engage with stakeholders, including farmers and industry bodies
- Travel nationally (and occasionally internationally) for research and stakeholder engagements
