Senior Open Source Cloud & Red Hat Engineer
Reports to: Enterprise Technology Solutions
Office Location: NEC XON Hybrid (Cape Town / Midrand)
Contract Type: 3-Year Fixed Term Contract
Main Purpose of the Job
NEC XON is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Open Source Cloud & Red Hat Engineer to support and expand its internal cloud and enterprise infrastructure capability across various strategic projects within NEC XON.
This is a critical technical appointment aimed at strengthening NEC XON’s internal capability and reducing dependency on outsourced service providers by building a strong, sustainable, open-source and cloud-focused engineering capability internally.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, administration, optimisation, automation, and support of enterprise Linux, Red Hat, and open-source cloud infrastructure environments.
Key Responsibilities
Red Hat & Linux Infrastructure
- Administer, maintain, and support Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments across enterprise customer platforms.
- Implement and maintain Red Hat Satellite, patch management, lifecycle management, and security hardening.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis for Linux-based environments.
- Ensure high availability, stability, performance, and operational compliance across critical systems.
Open Source Cloud Stack
- Support and maintain open-source cloud platforms and technologies.
- Assist with the deployment and support of hybrid cloud and private cloud environments.
- Work with cloud-native technologies and container platforms including:
- OpenShift
- Kubernetes
- Docker / Podman
- OpenStack (advantageous)
- Support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and cloud automation initiatives.
Automation & DevOps
- Develop and maintain automation solutions using:
- Ansible
- Python
- Shell scripting
- CI/CD tooling
- Drive infrastructure standardisation, orchestration, and automated deployment strategies.
- Contribute to DevOps and platform engineering initiatives.
Virtualisation & Enterprise Infrastructure
- Support virtualisation platforms including VMware, Nutanix, and/or KVM-based environments.
- Support storage, backup, disaster recovery, and enterprise infrastructure services.
- Participate in infrastructure migrations and cloud transformation initiatives.
Operational Support
- Participate in incident management, problem management, and operational support processes.
- Provide standby and after-hours support where required.
- Ensure compliance with customer SLAs and operational standards.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
