Career progression to Chief Investment Officer (CIO)
The successful candidate will take a leading role in the company's manager research and multi-manager portfolio construction - owning research across the asset manager universe, contributing directly to portfolio decisions, and helping to lead and develop the investment team. The role is deliberately structured with a clear growth trajectory into senior investment leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manager Research & Due Diligence
- Lead qualitative and quantitative research across the company's asset manager universe, spanning balanced, equity, fixed income, and alternative strategies.
- Own the production and quality of Manager Research Reporting, ensuring each covers investment philosophy, mandate, positioning, performance, peer comparison, and key risks to an institutional standard.
- Conduct and lead manager due diligence, manager meetings, and ongoing monitoring; identify and escalate key person risk, style drift, and performance deterioration promptly.
- Own manager rating recommendations and maintain the manager scoring framework with clear, defensible rationale.
Multi-Manager Portfolio Construction
- Contribute directly to portfolio construction and blending decisions across the compay's multi-managed product range.
- Monitor portfolio positioning against mandate constraints, benchmarks, and internal limits; support rebalancing reviews and document the rationale for changes.
- Develop and maintain portfolio and manager models (Morningstar Direct and related tools), and use data and analytics to support investment decisions.
Investment Committee & Client Delivery
- Prepare and present manager reviews and portfolio analysis at the Investment Committee (IC).
- Support the production of institutional-quality deliverables - New business pitches, client quarterly reports, investment consulting advisory outputs and ESD reporting, to deadline and to standard.
- Engage credibly with institutional clients and asset managers as a senior representative of the firm.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise, mentor, and develop junior analysts and the intern, raising research quality and analytical rigour across the team.
- Contribute to knowledge sessions, research priorities, and the ongoing development of the company's investment process and house standards.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATION
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Investment Management, Mathematics, or a related field.
- A minimum of 6-8 years' relevant investment experience, with a substantial track record in manager research and/or multi-manager portfolio management at an asset consultant, multi-manager, or asset management house.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating and selecting asset managers across multiple asset classes, and constructing or contributing to multi-managed portfolios.
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including fund performance analysis, attribution, and risk assessment.
- Proficiency with Morningstar (Direct / Publishing), advanced Excel, and PowerPoint; comfort building and maintaining investment models.
Advantageous
- CFA charter (or meaningful progress toward it); relevant postgraduate qualification; RE5.
- Coding / automation capability applied to investment reporting or analysis.
- Working knowledge of South Africa's financial and regulatory landscape, including B-BBEE, the Financial Sector Code, COFI, and Regulation 28.
- Experience presenting to or participating in an Investment Committee or Investment Advice Committee.
