About the position
Role Purpose
We are seeking an experienced Senior Microsoft Messaging Engineer to design, secure and maintain enterprise hybrid messaging environments. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across Exchange Online and on-premises Exchange, drive migration and remediation activities, resolve complex L3 escalations, and support high availability, security and service performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, maintain and troubleshoot hybrid connectivity between on-premises Exchange and Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online.
- Develop advanced PowerShell scripts to automate mailbox provisioning, compliance audits, administration and reporting.
- Configure and manage Microsoft Entra Connect, Microsoft Entra ID and cloud identity integration.
- Implement and manage messaging security and compliance controls, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC, Exchange Online Protection and Microsoft Purview DLP.
- Act as the senior escalation point for critical mail-flow interruptions, database issues and complex client-connectivity incidents.
- Lead tenant-to-tenant migrations, merger and acquisition transitions, and legacy messaging infrastructure decommissioning.
- Provide high-level architecture, solution design, performance optimisation, monitoring and capacity planning.
- Maintain technical standards, operational documentation and clear project or incident updates.
- Own priority-one incidents and assigned project tasks through to resolution or completion.
- Engage Microsoft support where required and coordinate across data centre, operations, delivery and executive stakeholder groups.
Minimum Experience and Technical Requirements
- Matric is required. A relevant National Diploma or degree is preferred.
- At least 7 years of enterprise IT infrastructure experience, including a minimum of 4 years in senior-level hybrid Exchange administration.
- Expert knowledge of Exchange Online, on-premises Exchange, Active Directory, DNS routing, Database Availability Groups and Windows Server failover clustering.
- Proven experience with conditional access, multi-factor authentication, email encryption and messaging security controls.
- Strong PowerShell scripting capability for enterprise-scale administration and automation.
- Experience mentoring junior technical team members and producing clear technical documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage L3 escalations, work to customer SLAs and communicate effectively with technical and senior stakeholders.
Certification Requirements
- Candidates should hold relevant, current Microsoft certifications. The following certifications are particularly relevant:
- MS-102: Microsoft 365 Administrator
- SC-300: Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator
- AZ-104: Microsoft Azure Administrator
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert, or the historical Messaging Administrator Associate credential, is preferred.
