Senior Legal Advisor - Recoveries & Insolvency

About the position

We are seeking an experienced Senior Legal Advisor to lead our Legal Recoveries & Insolvency function within the Banking Division. This is a strategic and highly visible role where you will drive recovery solutions that maximise cost efficiency and minimise risk and financial loss to the Bank

Main Purpose of the Role

To develop and manage a high-performing legal recoveries capability that delivers strategic value, ensures regulatory compliance, and optimises recoveries on distressed assets and insolvencies across the Central Region.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategy & Operational Oversight

• Lead and manage the end-to-end legal recoveries, insolvency, and debt collection processes.

• Stakeholder Management
• Resolve customer and partner queries promptly and effectively.
• Financial & Budget Management
• Systems & Reporting
• Lead recovery efforts on properties affected by land claims.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

• LLB degree or equivalent qualification.
• Admitted Attorney or Advocate (must have completed pupillage).
• Minimum 7 years' experience in legal recoveries, litigation, or debt collection (banking environment preferred).
• Minimum 5 years' management experience.

Critical Skills and Knowledge

• Expertise in financial principles and distressed account restructuring.
• Sound understanding of legal and insolvency practices in South Africa.
• Deep knowledge of legislation including Companies Act, NCA, CPA, and related laws.
• Strong stakeholder engagement, risk management, and communication abilities
