About the position
This is a senior Java seat on a live product, not a greenfield build. The system is already in production. New work has to fit what is there, and a change that looks fine in isolation can break something three modules away. You will know the domain, work with the analysts, and ship changes that do not take the product down.
Two roles are open, in Pretoria or Somerset West. You will sit in a development team, not as a lone contractor. Mentoring is part of the job, both ways: you follow the standards that already work, and you help other developers when their change does not.
What you will do:
- Support the existing product and build new functionality and components on top of it.
- Work with business analysts to understand the domain and turn new requirements into something that can actually be built.
- Refactor and improve the code so the product stays maintainable when the next requirement lands.
- Evaluate and improve performance and high-availability behaviour, not only feature delivery.
- Write unit and integrated system tests that show the change works as intended.
- Do root-cause analysis on bugs in an integrated system, including debugging other people’s code and fixing test data when that is what is broken.
- Build and deploy on an application server, then incorporate other developers’ work and get the system running again after the merge.
RequirementsWhat you need:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering or Computer Science, or matric plus the experience below.
- 8–10 years in a software development environment, of which at least 5 years as a senior developer in a team.
- Strong Java. Java 8 and above is required. Java 17 is preferred.
- Java EE server-side development, JPA/Hibernate, and an application server or container. Karaf is preferred.
- Maven, Git and Jenkins. SQL and a relational database. Apache Derby is relevant.
- ReactJS, Bootstrap, CSS3 and HTML5, plus REST or SOAP.
- A working knowledge of the SDLC as it applies to a software team, not only as a diagram.
- You deliver production-quality software: attention to detail, your own unit tests, and support through the quality testing phase.
Desired Skills:
- Java
- CSS3
- HTML5
