About the position

As a Senior Hardware Engineer, you will design, develop, and oversee electrical installations for movable infrastructure, with a focus on movable bridges. You will work within multidisciplinary teams on complex infrastructure projects where reliability, safety, and availability are critical. You will ensure that all designs meet current standards and guidelines for machine safety, including the Machinery Directive, SIL (Safety Integrity Level), and PL (Performance Level).
Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and specify electrical installations (E/I) for bridges, locks, and/or railway infrastructure.
  • Draft, review, and assess electrical diagrams, drawings, and cable calculations.
  • Select hardware components and prepare bills of materials (BOM).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, including NEN1010, NEN3140, NEN-EN-IEC 62061, and ISO 13849.
  • Apply safety standards such as SIL and PL in design and implementation.
  • Coordinate with software, mechanical, and civil engineering teams within projects.
  • Supervise installation, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning on site.
  • Prepare technical documentation and risk assessments in accordance with the Machinery Directive.

 

Requirements / Profile:

  • Completed higher professional education in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience as a Hardware Engineer within infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with bridges and/or locks is required; railway bridge experience is a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of machine safety, SIL/PL, and Machinery Directive or EU Machinery Regulation.
  • Proficiency in engineering tools such as EPLAN (mandatory).
  • Knowledge of motion control systems, motors, frequency controllers, and PLC interfaces.
  • Strong analytical skills, detail-oriented, and solution-focused.
  • Excellent communication skills in Afrikaans (Native) and English (spoken and written).
  • Team-oriented, proactive, independent, and stress-resistant.
