About the position

Postion Summary:
iThemba LABS seeks to appoint a Senior Electronics Technician in the Accelerator Operations and Technical Support (ATS) Department, under the Control Electronics and Software Engineering (CESE) division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily activities related to building, installation, configuration, testing, maintenance and repairs of the high stability, high power, power supplies and other control system electronic components
  • Compile technical documentation and product specifications
  • Design and develop electronic modules and sub-modules for various control system and the safety interlock system components
  • Ensure effective management of critical spare parts for power supplies and safety interlocking system
  • Responsible for procurement of power supplies and control system components
  • Ensure workplace health and safety compliance

Minimum Qualification:
  • Bachelors Degree / Advanced Diploma / NQF 7

Minimum Experience:
  • 5-5 years
  • BTech Electronics or Electrical Engineering or equivalent (NQF 7)

Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in building, testing, maintenance and repairs of various electronic equipment including power supplies or power electronics devices
  • PCB layout design and component soldering experience
  • Experience with Interlock Systems advantageous
  • Fault-finding from component to system level

Knowledge:
  • Strong practical knowledge of light current and heavy current electronics (Power electronics)
  • Knowledge of maintenance, fault-finding and repairs of power electronics and motion control systems
  • Advantageous:Programming experience (PLC programming and/or embedded systems programming)
  • Electronics design and circuit analysis
  • Good mechanical aptitude
  • General understanding of particle accelerators and related physics in a research environment
  • General understanding of radiation safety
