Senior Electrical Engineer: Transmission Substations (Gauteng)
Job Purpose:
A Transmission & Substation Engineer designs, maintains, and improves the infrastructure that carries high-voltage electricity from power plants to substations and then to distribution systems. This includes transmission lines, substations, and related equipment. They also conduct studies, perform calculations, and oversee construction and maintenance activities.
Job Requirements:
- Determining project costs, including materials, labor, and other expenses, to create accurate and competitive bids.
- Plan, direct, and manage full scope of electrical design and supply scope packages to ensure each stage is delivered on time delivery, on budget and to specification.
- Manage and drive key design and supply activities of suppliers and interface with other project stakeholders (internal and external).
- Delegate tasks to multi-disciplinary project team and manage to ensure work is completed on time and to a high standard.
- Ensure Supplier's deliverables and interrelated work is completed sequentially and in accordance with the contract and the project's key delivery dates.
- Pursue opportunities for design optimization/ value engineering.
- Communicate outputs and guide action based on identification of any impacts on schedule, quality and cost and mitigation of impacts and reporting as required.
- Share regular progress reports with stakeholders and clients.
- Resolve issues or delays, reduce risk of delays and cost overruns.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to solve technical, budget and time constraints.
- Review project documents such as design drawings, specifications, inspection reports and changes and take appropriate action if required.
- Conduct regular meetings with suppliers and engineering / other stakeholders.
- Identify, mitigate, and escalate risks to enable the project to meet its project schedule and obligations, minimize risk and maximize opportunities for cost avoidance and/or cost reduction.
- Regular interaction with Quality to ensure timely inspections and review inspection reports to be across any material corrective actions required.
- Monitor performance and/or KPIs proactively resolve issues related to supplier performance; and ensure that all records are methodically archived in line with procedures as the project [URL Removed]
- BSc/ Beng/ BTech in Electrical Engineering
- Professionally registered with ECSA (PrEng or PrTech) or eligible for professional registration
Experience:
- At least 8 years of experience in the following:
- Procurement of electrical plant and equipment for large infrastructure projects.
- Sound experience in Electrical Transmission Design Practices.
- Substation construction and installation.
- HV and EHV Design/ Transmission Design.
- Experience in commissioning electrical substations will be advantageous.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Computer proficient, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD/ Microstation, CDEGS/ ETAP/ Digsilent and related Substation Software
- Able to use initiative and solve problems through analytical thinking.
- Able to work with cross-regional teams with a strong focus on delivering excellence.
