About the position
Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Substation Primary Plant Design Engineer to lead the delivery of complex transmission and distribution substation projects. This opportunity is ideal for a technically accomplished engineer with extensive experience in high-voltage substation design, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven track record delivering projects up to 400kV. Experience on 765kV projects will be highly advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preliminary, conceptual, detailed design, and construction support for high-voltage substation projects.
- Prepare and review conceptual designs, technical specifications, bills of quantities, and tender documentation.
- Develop detailed primary plant designs for transmission and distribution substations.
- Review contractor designs and ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable standards.
- Provide technical leadership throughout project execution, construction support, testing, and commissioning.
- Participate in design reviews, FATs, SATs, site inspections, and commissioning activities.
- Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, project methodologies, schedules, and budgets.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, utilities, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the ongoing development of the engineering team.
- Ensure compliance with SHEQ requirements and industry best practices.
Minimum Requirements
- BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional registration with ECSA or an internationally recognised engineering institution.
- Minimum of 15 years' experience in substation design within transmission and distribution environments.
- Extensive experience delivering detailed substation primary plant designs up to 400kV.
- Experience on 765kV substation projects will be highly advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of Eskom standards, IEC, IEEE, NRS, and SANS requirements.
- Experience working within utilities, EPC contractors, or engineering consulting environments.
Advantageous Experience
- Exposure to renewable energy grid connection projects.
- Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, EPLAN, DigSilent, ETAP, PowerFactory, or PSSE.
- Strong understanding of transmission infrastructure and high-voltage engineering.
