SALT Design Mechanical Technologist: Configuration Manager at South African Astronomical Observatory

About the position

Postion Summary:

The SALT Design Mechanical Technologist (SDMT) will be domiciled at the observatory's site at Sutherland where accommodation may be provided. The SDMT supports the SALT Technical Operations team to maintain and develop various mechanical and electro-mechanical devices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Update CAD models and drawings to reflect the physical telescope
• Create CAD models and drawings of physical plant and equipment where they do not exist
• Conceptualize and develop new design solutions taking certain hardware through it's full lifecycle
• Drive product lifecycle management (PLM) strategy (with an emphasis on implementation), based on SALT requirements to align with global best practices
• Report on activitiesWrite and/or contribute to international conference papers
• Do standby duties

Minimum Qualification:

• BTech in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification

Minimum Experience:

• At least 5 Years of experience in a technically complex environment
• Extensive exposure to practical aspects of electro-optical and electro-mechanical systems
• Experience with Siemens NX CAD and Siemens TeamCenter (TC)Quality control experience
• Proficiency in doing datapacks to BS8888 standards and/or ISO 10110A keen interest in astronomy will be a recommendationKnowledge:
• Strong knowledge of metrology and how to apply this practically for precision requirements
• Strong knowledge of drafting standards Strong knowledge of CAD systems, and it's use within a PLM system
• Strong knowledge of various manufacturing methods for precision applications
