About the position
Our client, a leading mining company, is seeking to appoint a dedicated Safety Officer to coordinate and implement occupational health, safety, and environmental programs at their mine in the North West. The role is critical in ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, company policies, and operational standards, while fostering a proactive safety culture across the site.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and monitor mine's occupational health and safety activities in support of the SHEQ Manager.
- Ensure all legal appointments are current and compliant with MHSA and OHSA directives.
- Conduct Planned Task Observations (PTOs), inspections, and audits on machinery, equipment, and work areas.
- Facilitate and document SHE meetings, toolbox talks, and safety training sessions.
- Lead risk assessments, hazard identification, and development of safe operating procedures (SOPs).
- Oversee incident and accident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Ensure safety equipment, fire suppression systems, and PPE are maintained and compliant.
- Support environmental management initiatives, including waste handling and compliance monitoring.
- Maintain and update safety files, records, and reports for internal and external audits.
- Liaise with supervisors, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure adherence to safety standards.
Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Senior Certificate).
- COMSOC 1 & 2 / SAMTRAC (mandatory).
- Minimum 5 years' experience in health and safety within an open-cast mining environment.
- Beneficiation plant and conveyor system experience.
- Blasting and load-and-haul exposure advantageous.
- Environmental management experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license (Code B/08 or higher).
- Computer literacy (MS Office).
