About the position
PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To Manage Safety related Projects, to devise, enhancements to the risk management system and minimise risk exposure through policies, procedures and safe work practices. To facilitate and conduct audits to measure compliance and implement initiatives to address shortcomings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- National Diploma in Safety management/Diploma in Risk Management Assessments (either specialising in Safety, Engineering or Process/Mining is essential
- Blasting Certificate or Recognised Engineering Trade Certificate is essential
- At least 15 years within a mining environment of which 6 years relevant experience working with systems within Safety environment is essential
- 2 years experience as a Chief Safety Officer is essential
- 6 years' experience in Management position within Safety environment is essential
- 6 year experience within other mining companies in Safety/Engineering environment
- 2 years experience working in a large and small project environment would be desirable
- 2 years' experience in a training environment would be desirable
- Knowledge of work-related hazards and associated risks
- Understanding of human behaviour and the impact of cultural differences on human behaviour
- Relevant safety legislation, i.e., Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and COID Act is essential
- International Standards (ISO) i.e., OHSAS18001/ ISO45001, ISO9001, ISO14001 is desirable
- Valid medical Certificate or be medically fit to obtain such certificate is essential.
COMPETENCIES:
- Computer Literacy is essential
- Facilitation, Report writing, Auditing and Presentation skills are essential
- How to conduct a root cause / fault tree analysis (investigation skills)
- Verbal and written communication skills (internal and external)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
- Plan and schedule Safety project interventions and conduct continuous needs analysis in Safety related methodologies
- Identify and develop new Safety related projects by evaluating data to provide Information to Management for the enhancement Safety performance of the group
- Monitor and report on trends and identify leading indicators
- Investigate best practice within the Mining industry and implement best practices where applicable with regards to Safety and compiling reports
- Measure compliance to the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Impala policies and procedures to manage risk (safety) in the workplace in accordance with the above Acts.
- Compile budgets and manage cost to ensure that expenses are within approved budget parameters.
- To facilitate and manage peer reviews on fatal risk exposure and measure remedial actions to reduce serious incide
- To report on safety statistics and analysis of trends to management to ensure sufficient availability of information so that appropriate initiatives can be put in place and performance is meas
- To conduct Analysis of all data collected and provide guidance to the operational units so as to prevent repeat accide
- To determine the risk exposure and formulate management action plans to mitigate the risk and incorporate management risk plans into standards and safe-work procedures.
- To measure at risk behaviour of people in the workplace and influence change to reduce risk taking through provision of relevant information, coaching and training
