About the position

Background:

  • The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges
  • It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology

 
Main purpose of the job:

  • To conduct quantitative data analysis and support the design, implementation, monitoring and dissemination of climate change and health research projects as well as obtain regulatory approvals, develop research tools, lead and support scientific articles

Location:

  • Hillbrow, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

  • Conduct literature review to determine what research has been done and what the gaps in knowledge are develop research protocols
  • Conduct programme evaluations
  • Obtain approval from relevant ethics and other regulatory bodies
  • Develop research and programme evaluation tools
  • Write, review and/or approve SOPs
  • Train the project team and other relevant staff
  • Supervise fieldwork (data collection, interviews etc.) and where necessary, conduct data collection
  • Support quality data management, including REDCap-based data capture, cleaning and quality assurance
  • Lead and support quantitative data analysis
  • Support grant applications and related technical inputs where required
  • Monitor progress of research projects against project plans, ethics requirements and donor deliverables
  • Write progress reports as per project reporting requirements
  • Stay abreast with relevant research findings and collaborate with other investigators on related studies
  • Conduct quantitative data analysis according to agreed data analysis plans
  • Analyse climate-health, public health and programme evaluation data using R and STATA
  • Lead or contribute to peer reviewed publications (4 per year)
  • Lead or contribute to conference presentations
  • Disseminate research findings internally and externally including presentations at research days, stakeholder meetings and conferences
  • Coach and train team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organisation
  • Contribute towards the development of knowledge within the team by identifying relevant training needs and topics
  • Develop relevant training material and presentations
  • Conduct research training interventions
  • Participate and actively contribute to research forums
  • Participate actively in fora as required
  • Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information
  • Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action where required and within delegated authority
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Take ownership for driving own career development in attending training and development sessions and relevant forums/meetings
  • Maintain and update knowledge of developments in the climate change and health field and quantitative areas of expertise

Required minimum education and training:

  • Master's Degree in appropriate discipline, preferably Biostatistics, Data Science, Climate Science, Epidemiology, Public Health or a related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative data collection, data management and quantitative data analysis. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and REDCap
  • Proficiency in statistical packages, preferably R Studio and/or STATA. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated publication record

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum 2 to 4 years' research experience, preferably in Public Health, Climate and Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Implementation Science or a related Research field

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Certification in Good Clinical P ractice (GCP)
  • Proven technical expertise in quantitative research and data analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing research projects and programme evaluations
  • Experience in development of data analysis plans
  • Proficient in quantitative data analysis software, particularly R and/or STATA
  • Experience with data quality assurance, complex statistical analysis and scientific writing
  • Experience leading and contributing to peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, progress reports and grant applications
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Ordered, systematic and analytical in approach to research
  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Assertive, confident and adaptable
  • Tactful, respectful and non-judgmental
