Research Scientist: AMS andNuclear Science at NRF National Research Foundation

About the position

Postion Summary:
iThemba Labs seeks to employ a Research Scientist: AMS and Nuclear Science. The incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of research projects with a focus on ion beam applications or materials science in line with the iThemba LABS Long Range Plan for
the Department.

The incumbent will also be responsible for experimental design and setup (data production), analysis and interpretation and publication.

Key Responsibilities:

• Work both as an individual and as a member of a team
• Supply input for long and short-term research objectives of the department and outside collaborations
• Initiate, plan, and assist in planning experiments in collaboration with other scientists at iThemba LABS and external users
• Study articles in journals, attend conferences and workshops and consult other advanced information sources to keep abreast with the latest developments in ion beam applications or materials science
• Set up, perform, analyse and write up experiments using particle beams with sophisticated equipment or assist in the afore-mentioned tasks
• Perform calculations with various sophisticated beam-transport codes
• Writing and application of computer programs relevant to research and its applications

Minimum Qualification:

• PhD in Physics, Nuclear Science or related field

Experience:

• 3-5 years post PhD experience in experimental nuclear science
• Experience in running experimental facilities/instruments
• Experience in performing high quality scientific measurements
• Experience in co-supervising post-graduate students' projects

Knowledge:

• Experimental design and setup, analysis and interpretation, and publication
• Demonstrable ability to perform calculations and data analysis with various sophisticated computer programs relevant to research and its applications
• Demonstrable ability to plan and manage scientific research projects
• Ability to work in a culturally diverse team of research scientists
• Proven workplace, institutional, collegial, and universal professionalism
