About the position
Background:
- The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges
- It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology
Main purpose of the job:
- To provide best practice, data collection, clinical assessments, collection of specimens and care, according to different study protocols
- To ensure that this is done with accordance to site Standard Operating Procedures
Location:
- 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Shandukani CRS
Key performance areas:
- Inform participants about the study
- Obtain informed consent according to standard operating procedures
- Assess participant medical records and assess eligibility for study participation
- Administer study questionnaires / interviews
- Provide appropriate health education and counselling where necessary
- Refer participants to alternative care if necessary
- If required by the study:
- Biological sample collection, processing, ensuring proper storage, and/or shipping to the laboratory as per study requirements
- Obtain vital signs and conduct special investigations e.g. ECG, Rapid Testing etc.
- Conduct pre- and post HIV and Hepatitis B test Counselling (if needed)
- Inform participants of test results, as required
- Centrifuge and process all samples as per protocol and record in all documents as per standard operating procedures
- Collect participant data from medical notes and complete source documents
- Completion of source documents accurately and in a timely manner
- Maintain full clinical records for all participants
- Maintain an adequate inventory of laboratory samples (both electronic and hard copy, as required)
- Perform sample-related activities such as, but not limited to, labelling, storage, collection, and completion of data clarification forms
- Compile relevant reports and feedback on all activities
- Quality control study documents
- Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Report on Protocol Deviations for relevant studies
- Collect data from participant file and other source documentation and record on relevant data base, as per study requirement
Required minimum education and training:
- Diploma in General Nursing (3 years)
- Currently a valid Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
- Fluent in English, Sesotho and isiZulu
Professional Body Registration:
- South African Nursing Council (SANC) in general nursing and midwifery
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Working experience with maternal and pediatric participants will be an advantage
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Share Point
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Sound work ethic and good self-management skills
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
- Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
- Take ownership for driving own career development in attending training and development sessions and relevant meetings
