About the position
Background:
- The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges
- It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology
Main purpose of the job:
- To conduct day-to-day study related activities with our clinical research team in the Tuberculous (TB) ward
- Implement research protocols, ensuring participant safety, and maintaining high-quality data collection in line with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards
Location:
- 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Wits RHI Research Centre Clinical Research Site (CRS)
Key performance areas:
- Coordinate and conduct participant recruitment, screening, enrolment, and follow-up visits
- Obtain informed consent according to SOPs and ethical guidelines
- Monitor participant safety, report adverse events promptly, and refer participants to specialist care when required
- Collect vital signs and conduct study-specific clinical investigations e.g., sputum collections, etc
- Conduct blood draws and process samples as required and send to the laboratory
- Administer study questionnaires as required
- Inform participants of test results, as required
- Provide appropriate health education and counselling where necessary
- Take responsibility for the Emergency Contact Research cell phone, during delegated time
- Ensure labs are printed, converted, graded, and reviewed by an investigator prior to CRF completion, according to SOPs
- Collect participant data from medical notes and complete CRFs
- Maintain full clinical records for all participants
- Maintain an inventory of laboratory samples
- Perform sample related activities such as but not limited to labelling, storage, collection, and completion of DCF’s
- Compile relevant reports and feedback on all activities
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
- Maintain accurate and timely study documentation and case report forms
- Monitor participant safety and report adverse events promptly
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth study operations
Required minimum education and training:
- Diploma in General Nursing (3 Years)
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 2 years relevant work experience within a clinical research environment, preferably with TB management experience
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Working experience with maternal, neonatal, and paediatric participants will be an advantage
- Product Adherence Counselling for participants is also an advantage
- Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices in high-risk clinical environments
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills, together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and SharePoint
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Sound work ethic and good self-management skills
- Willing to work on a rotational shift basis (12 Hours), which will include night shift when required
