About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
- In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Main purpose of the job:
- To design and implement research projects, analyse the research data and publish scientific articles
Location:
- Edendale Lay Ecumencial Center Clinic, Edendale, Pietermaritzburg
Key performance areas:
- Contribute to writing research and funding proposals
- Stay abreast with relevant research findings
- Obtain ethical approval from relevant regulatory bodies
- Ensure that study is implemented in accordance with protocol and relevant good clinical practice and ethical guidelines
- Maintain oversight of referral systems via direct interaction and assist in the establishment of Memoranda of understanding (MOUs) as required by the study protocol/s
- Contribute to the development and review of clinical standard operating procedures as needed
- Conduct clinical assessments, treatment and/or referral of participants who participate in the study; Record observations in source notes, patient logs and Case Report Forms (CRFs) in accordance with study specific procedures manual and protocol
- Assess and report adverse events in accordance with the protocol
- Liaise with the laboratory regarding the interpretation of diagnostic test results
- Conduct regular quality assurance reviews
- Monitor the progress of research project; Produce monthly progress reports; Demonstrate leadership and commitment to excellence by ensuring that protocol and performance targets are met
- Write progress reports to stakeholders including networks and funders
- Conduct data analysis and write up results
- Compile conference presentations
- Disseminate research findings internally and to universities and others stakeholders such the community, CABs and media
- Publish scientific publications
- Participate in advisory committees
- Peer review of journal articles
- Attend to all staffing requirements and administration
- Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilisation and maintenance of sound labour relations
- Train staff in clinical procedures and maintain oversight of nursing staff
- Ensure the smooth functioning of the project team and promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information
- Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments
- Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action
- Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organisation
- Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information
- Provision of clinical care to patients and participants
- Accurate and comprehensive medical record keeping
- Management of patient/participant flow in the clinic
- Clinical trial oversight or management as designated by the principal investigator
- Participation in all phases/components of the research process
- Facilitation and resolution of queries from Data Management and Internal / External Monitors within required timeframe
- Complete accurate and comprehensive medical record keeping, inclusive of reviewing of results for all participants
- Quality Check of Source Documents during participant visit ensuring any outstanding components are proactively addressed
Required minimum education and training:
- Medical Degree (MBCHB)
- Qualified as Medical Doctor
Required minimum work experience:
- At least 1-3 years of clinical experience, preferably including work in HIV, sexual and reproductive health, or primary health care settings. - Experience in clinical trials or research setting is strongly preferred
- Membership of Professional/School/Faculty/ Department Committees and/or taking leadership roles in the Public Health domain within the Public or NGO sectors
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Experience in public health will be an advantage
- Progress towards a master’s degree in a research field is highly desirable
- Certification in good clinical practice
- Experience in implementing independent projects
- Familiarity with data analysis software
- Ordered, systematic and analytical in approach to research
- Tactful, respectful, and non-judgmental
- Good administrative skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Assertive, confident and adaptable
- Able to show proof of publication records and conference presentations
