About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
- In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Division: Southern Centre for Inequality Studies
Main purpose of the job:
- To manage study research activities and ensure they are conducted and completed
Location:
Key performance areas:
- Plan for project activities, manage timelines and deliverables
- Set up field work in each of the study sites
- Recruit Fieldworkers for the study
- Set up a data repository
- Train and support new Researchers on study protocol, tools, techniques, reporting with the assistance of the PI
- Recruit Research Participants for the study
- Ensure that all consent forms authorise the carrying out of the different study procedures, as per study protocol, within 48 hours of the consent process
- Ensure that all consent forms are accurately and completely filled out, and filed physically and electronically
- Ensure that all interviews are recorded and stored as per study procedures
- Manage survey related activities
- Complete accurate and detailed field notes
- Oversee entry of data (audio/or/and visual recordings, notes, demographic info and all relevant study data) into study data repository
- Quality check and review Researchers study techniques and data and mentor and support as necessary
- Ensure all interviews are translated (if required) and accurately transcribed
- Communicate with the PI and other Researchers to address any data quality issues which may arise
- Notify PI of any issues with quality and breach of ethics
- Ensure that all fieldwork related expenses and administration is accurate and up-to-date at all times
- Plan for an organise all logistics around meetings - for teams, Participants, Communities and Stakeholders
Required minimum education and training:
- Master’s degree (relevant)
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum of 1 year relevant experience
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Experience working as a Researcher in similar qualitative and or mixed methods research studies
- Experience in social sciences and/or public health, working in low resource settings and academic research
- Experience with qualitative data analysis software aptitude/willingness to learn
- Able to communicate well, both written and spoken
- Motivated and able to manage and lead a team and work independently as well as part of a team
- Work with senior government and NGO Stakeholders
- Ability to refer Research Participants to appropriate services if required
- Organize large team meetings and Stakeholder workshops and community feedback sessions
- Experience with survey design and implementation would be will be advantageous
- Local travel will be required
