About the position
Background:
- Named after Nobel Laureate and Wits University graduate, Sydney Brenner, the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) is a burgeoning multi-disciplinary research institute dedicated to investigating the molecular and genomic aetiology of diseases among African populations
- There mission is to conduct biomedical molecular and genomic research addressing health priorities in African

Division: Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB)
Main purpose of the job:
- To assist with laboratory work, including but not limited to, sample processing, DNA extractions, quality control and sequencing
- To develop Standard Operating Procedures, manage procurement and assist in sample shipments
Location:
- Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) - 9 Jubilee Road Parktown Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
- Carry out the required research (as identified by the Research Team)
- Assist with writing research proposals and proof reading
- Assist with applications for obtaining ethical approval from relevant regulatory committees / bodies
- Assist with writing research protocols and the development of SOPs
- Engage community stakeholders regarding research studies, as and when required
- Monitor the progress of the research being undertaken through ongoing liaison with the Research Team
- Collaborate closely with the Research Team on related studies within the unit re study design, protocol, research tools and other research related activities
- Assist with research administration
- Assist with development of biorepository
- Assist with obtaining quotations, procurement and receipting of goods and services
- Assist with management and servicing laboratory equipment
- Assist with ad hoc research duties
Required minimum education and training:
- BSc (Honours) or MSc in a relevant discipline (e.g. Molecular Biology or Genetics) and training in laboratory techniques
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience or demonstrated competency
- Experience with DNA extraction from human samples is advantageous
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Strong organizational skills
- Good communication skills
- Attention to detail and self-motivated
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Sound knowledge of best practices and lab standards
- Able to work under pressure and adherence to deadlines
- Follow through on assigned tasks, able to work independently and work as part of a diverse or multidisciplinary team
