About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
- In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Division: Care for Kids
Main purpose of the job:
- To provide research support to Care for Kids project related to project outcomes
- This includes research projects run by SIOP Africa
Location:
- Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH)
Key performance areas:
- Assists with planning and coordination of research study protocols
- Support adherence to protocols at sites
- Maintain and update project documentation
- Assist the project researcher and PI in donor reporting
- Assists with planning and implementation of data collection and analysis
- Participate in data collection as appropriate
- Capture research data in an appropriate database
- Perform data clean up as and when required
- Assist with statistical data analysis and write up of results
- Compile relevant reports and research findings to address questions that transpired from meetings, management or donors’ requests
- Assist with disseminating research results and publications
- Stay abreast with relevant research findings within the unit
- Assist with administrative tasks related to paediatric haematology-oncology research and SIOP Africa projects
Required minimum education and training:
- Honours Degree in an appropriate Science field (Human Genetics, Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine, Biostatistics, Clinical Associate, etc.)
- MSc would be advantageous
Required minimum work experience:
- 1-year relevant work experience in a research or academic environment
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Computer literacy (incl. Microsoft Office Suite)
- Experience in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or Good Clinical Practice (GCP) advantageous, research methodology and scientific writing mandatory
- Good interpersonal skills, self-motivated, organized, meticulous and punctual
- Ability to prioritize own workload to meet deadlines
- Adheres to procedures
- Able to maintain confidentiality and act tactfully
- Understanding of medical records, ability to read and interpret notes, lab results, medication charts, oncology roadmaps, and discharge summaries; knowledge of basic clinical terminology; ability to extract variables consistently and accurately; understanding of confidentiality and the legal requirements for handling patient information
