About the position
An opportunity is available in Bloemfontein for an ICU-qualified nursing professional to provide high-acuity patient care within a hospital environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong critical care expertise, sound clinical judgement and the ability to respond confidently to the changing needs of critically ill patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU and High Care environment.
- Conduct ongoing patient assessments and monitor vital signs, clinical status and response to treatment.
- Provide competent care involving ventilators, haemodynamic monitoring, infusion devices and oxygen therapy.
- Administer medication and prescribed treatments safely and in accordance with professional standards.
- Recognise and respond promptly to deteriorating patients and clinical emergencies, escalating concerns appropriately.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and clinical documentation.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols and maintain a safe clinical environment.
- Collaborate effectively with doctors and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Communicate appropriately with patients and their families regarding care and treatment.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards and applicable healthcare legislation.
- Participate in quality improvement and clinical governance initiatives.
- Work effectively across shifts, including weekends and public holidays as required.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse / Professional Nurse, with annual practising status maintained.
- Diploma or Degree in General Nursing.
- Post-basic or postgraduate qualification in Critical Care Nursing / ICU, or an equivalent SANC-recognised critical care qualification is essential.
- Minimum of 2-3 years' recent ICU or High Care experience within a hospital setting.
- Valid BLS (Basic Life Support) certification; ACLS, PALS or ATLS certification will be advantageous.
- Demonstrated competence in ventilator care, haemodynamic monitoring, infusion devices, oxygen therapy, emergency response and escalation of deteriorating patients.
- Strong clinical judgement and the ability to make sound decisions in a high-acuity environment.
- Good communication, record-keeping, infection prevention, computer literacy and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work shifts, weekends and public holidays in accordance with operational requirements.
- Ability to function effectively under pressure and adapt to changing clinical priorities.
