About the position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - ICU & High Care

Location: Private Hospital - Pretoria (Gauteng Province)
Reporting To: Unit Manager / Nursing Manager

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (ICU & High Care) is responsible for delivering safe, high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Care environments. The role requires advanced clinical judgment, comprehensive patient monitoring, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes in line with Mediclinic standards, values, and protocols.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill and high-dependency patients.
  • Continuously assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans.
  • Monitor and interpret vital signs and advanced monitoring equipment (e.g., ventilators, cardiac monitors).
  • Administer medications, intravenous therapies, and blood products according to prescribed protocols.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, including cardiac arrest and deterioration in patient condition.

Clinical Skills & Procedures

  • Operate and manage ICU-specific equipment such as ventilators, infusion pumps, and dialysis machines.
  • Assist with invasive procedures (e.g., intubation, central line insertion).
  • Ensure infection prevention and control practices are strictly followed.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely patient records.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including doctors, physiotherapists, and dieticians.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing support, education, and updates.
  • Participate in ward rounds and contribute to clinical decision-making processes.

Quality & Compliance

  • Adhere to Mediclinic policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

Professional Development

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of critical care nursing practices.
  • Participate in in-service training, workshops, and continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Mentor and support junior staff and student nurses where required.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Diploma/Degree in General Nursing
  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse

Experience

  • Proven experience in ICU and/or High Care nursing environment
  • Competence in managing critically ill patients
  • Experience in private hospital setting (advantageous)
