About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
- In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Main purpose of the job:
- To coordinate and manage the follow-up data collection of the study
- To assist with all regulatory and administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of the study
Location:
- DPHRU - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto
Key performance areas:
- Performs bone density/x-ray scans
- Coordinates patient clinical history with procedure, documents information, provides instructions to patient during treatment
- Positions, immobilizes, and determines accurate technique exposure for patient during examination
- Follows manufacturer protocol for operation of densitometry and x-ray equipment to assure safe environment for procedures
- Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others
- Assumes responsibility of physical and psychological needs of patients during scanning
- Assists in maintaining records and patients chart by documenting patients treatment and response, respecting confidentiality and established policy
- Responsible for maintaining equipment and reports machinery malfunction
- Collecting study data involving DXA, PEAPOD and or sonographs
- Assist with other data collection – for example medical related questionnaires
- Perform scan analysis, Archive Back-ups and ensure Quality Control
- Conduct routine daily inspection of equipment and quality assurance procedures, reporting any deficiencies or malfunction to the appropriate manager
- Generate study reports for Researchers
- Take responsibility for keeping the department in general and specifically the work area, clean, tidy and safe
- Have a flexible approach to work so that urgent cases can be facilitated as necessary
- Ensure effective and economic use of resources and report all occurrences of defects which may affect health and safety
- Operating imaging equipment: This includes X-ray machines, CT scanners, MRIs, and ultrasound machines
- Positioning patients: Ensuring patients are in the correct position for optimal image capture
- Adjusting equipment settings: Setting exposure times and distances to obtain high-quality images
- Preparing patients: Explaining procedures, answering questions, and reassuring patients
- Ensuring safety: Following radiation safety protocols to minimize exposure to both patients and staff
- Processing and managing images: Ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of patient records
- Collaborating with other healthcare professionals: Working with doctors and other staff to interpret images and plan treatments
- Maintaining and calibrating equipment: Ensuring equipment is functioning correctly and producing accurate images
- Keeping up-to-date: Staying informed about new technologies and procedures
- Using radiographic equipment, including surgical and portable equipment to do x-rays
- Prioritising patients to complete all scheduled appointments and allow for emergency procedures
- Monitoring the radiographic equipment and supplies and ensuring there are sufficient supplies by submitting purchasing request proactively
- Analysing and reporting the results of x-rays to Doctors
- Handling phone calls from patients and Doctors to answer technical questions and offer pre-procedure guidance
Required minimum education and training:
- National Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography (Ultrasound)
- A valid driver’s license is required
Professional Body Registration:
- Registered with the HPCSA as a Radiographer
Required minimum work experience:
- At least 2 years working experience as a Radiographer
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Staff supervisory experience and/or experience managing research studies or fieldwork would be an advantage
- Ability to function in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment and pay attention to detail
- Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a diverse team
- Computer literacy - competence in REDCap, MS Word and Excel essential
- Able to exercise discretion and independent decision making
- Well organised
- Problem solver
- Ability to engage with the community in which the study is conducted
