About the position

Location: Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal


Employment Type: Full-time (on-site) 
target Date: ASAP / Negotiable
We are seeking a reliable, detail-oriented bookkeeper to join our team in Pietermaritzburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with South African accounting standards, and supporting the smooth operation of our finance function.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Record and process all financial transactions (invoices, payments, receipts, journals) accurately and timeously
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including creditor and debtor reconciliations
  • Reconcile bank statements, petty cash, and inter-company accounts monthly
  • Prepare and maintain books up to trial balance
  • Process payroll and handle related statutory submissions (UIF, PAYE, SDL where applicable)
  • Generate monthly financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow summaries
  • Assist with VAT returns, budgets, and year-end preparations in collaboration with external accountants
  • Ensure all financial data is backed up and securely maintained
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in accounts promptly
Requirements:


  • Proven bookkeeping experience (minimum 2–5 years preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks (QuickBooks Online or Desktop) – must be able to demonstrate proficiency
  • Solid understanding of basic accounting principles, double-entry bookkeeping, and South African tax compliance
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel (intermediate to advanced level – pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.)
  • Matric / Grade 12 certificate (essential); Diploma or Certificate in Bookkeeping, Accounting, or related field highly advantageous
  • Attention to detail, strong numerical accuracy, and excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict deadlines
  • Based in or willing to commute to Pietermaritzburg (on-site role)
Advantageous:


  • Experience with payroll software or SARS eFiling
  • Knowledge of other accounting packages (e.g., Sage) as a secondary skill
  • ICB membership or studying towards bookkeeping certification
