About the position
A leading FMCG manufacturing company is seeking an experienced and technically proficient Quality Manager (Microbiology) to join their Quality Department. As Quality Manager (Microbiology), you will be responsible for ensuring that all laboratory processes, procedures, and results meet established quality standards and regulatory requirements. You will oversee quality control and assurance programmes, implement best practices for microbiological testing, maintain compliance with ISO 17025 and other relevant standards, and drive continuous improvement in laboratory operations.
Reporting to: Factory Manager
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Management & Compliance:
- Develop, implement, and maintain a robust Quality Management System (QMS) aligned with ISO 9001, ISO 17025, and other relevant standards
- Ensure all laboratory processes, procedures, and results meet established quality standards and regulatory requirements
- Perform regular audits, assessments, and inspections to ensure compliance with food safety legislation and dairy-specific specifications
- Maintain compliance with HACCP, GMP, and all relevant food safety regulations
- Manage documentation related to quality standards, laboratory protocols, and compliance records
- Ensure audit readiness through accurate record-keeping and documentation management
Microbiological Testing & Laboratory Operations:
- Oversee quality control and assurance programmes for microbiological testing
- Implement best practices for microbiological testing methodologies
- Ensure understanding and application of microbiological safety protocols and laboratory hygiene
- Monitor organisms of interest, growth conditions, and testing methods
- Troubleshoot technical issues related to laboratory processes, methodologies, and instrumentation
- Maintain familiarity with modern laboratory equipment and technologies used in microbiological testing
Data Management & Analysis:
- Utilise statistical methodologies for data interpretation and quality control
- Manage Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and data analysis software
- Conduct root cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive action plans (CAPA)
- Monitor trends, deviations, and non-conformances through data-driven decision-making
Regulatory Compliance & Audits:
- Maintain deep understanding of regulatory requirements, audit processes, and inspection procedures
- Liaise with regulatory agencies and manage external audit processes
- Ensure validation protocols and compliance requirements for laboratory practices are maintained
- Conduct internal audits and coordinate responses to external audits
Process Improvement & Risk Management:
- Lead Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality enhancement
- Initiate and lead process changes to optimise laboratory performance
- Identify potential risks associated with laboratory practices and implement risk mitigation strategies
- Conduct risk assessments to ensure laboratory safety and compliance
Team Leadership & Development:
- Provide training and support to laboratory staff on quality standards and best practices
- Design and implement training programmes related to quality standards and laboratory procedures
- Assess training needs and enhance staff competencies
- Manage laboratory teams effectively and influence a culture of quality
- Build and maintain positive relationships with team members, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies
- Provide constructive feedback and resolve conflicts effectively
Project Management:
- Plan, execute, and manage quality-related projects effectively
- Allocate resources, manage timelines, and oversee budgets for quality initiatives
- Collaborate with other departments to drive continuous improvement across operations
What You Bring:
Essential Qualifications:
- BSc in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Food Science (Essential)
- Certificate in ISO 17025 and/or laboratory accreditation standards (Essential)
- Food Safety Legislation knowledge and certification
- Dairy-specific specification knowledge
- Auditing Principles certification or training
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in a quality management or laboratory management role within food manufacturing Microbiological Testing
- Proven track record in microbiological testing and quality assurance
- Experience implementing and maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation
- Full competence typically developed over 5 years in similar role
