About the position
Our client, a leading mining company is looking to appoint a Project Specialist to join their team based in Kathu, Northern Cape for a 12-month renewable contract.
The Project Manager takes accountability at an operational level for the planning and delivery of the project / scope of work assigned to him/her. He / she is responsible to::
- Manage all aspects (time, costs, quality, objectives/deliverables, minimise negative environment impacts and maximise participation and development) of the project
- Manage the scheduling of resources and assessment of the projects ability to effectively achieve its objectives
- Effective safety leadership and behaviour modelling for the project team, contractors and construction workforce
- The development of an integrated plan (for the scope of work) incorporating all stakeholders and technical functions and in line with the company's standards
- Set-up of required controls to ensure delivery against these standards and the objectives as defined in the project charter
- Effective leadership of cross-functional teams in line with the company's values
- Transparent reporting of progress to stakeholders
REQUIREMENTS:
- University degree/diploma (NQF Level 7)
- Qualification in Project Management
- Must have a valid driver's license and own vehicle.
- Experience working in Mining and related operations environment
- Technical areas - Geology, Mining, Metallurgy, Engineering
- Investigating root causes of safety incident on projects (ICAM, Review of Safety Management Plans, etc.)
- 5 - 8 years' experience in the following:
- Construction / Engineering Project Management environment
- Construction management experience
- General management experience
- Contractor Management
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in project management tools and techniques for construction projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Strong leadership and management skills to oversee construction activities, coordinate with contractors, and resolve issues or conflicts.
- Able to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with construction projects, including safety risks, technical challenges, and external factors.
- Skilled in budgeting, cost estimation, and cost management to control project expenditures and prevent cost overruns.
- Effective communication skills to liaise with stakeholders, convey project requirements and updates and facilitate collaboration among team members.
- Knowledge of Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (AHSA)
- Knowledge of ISO 9001and ISO 14001
Duties & Responsibilities:
Safety, Health & Environment
- Ensure that area-specific safety measures are strictly followed, focusing on the unique risks associated with their respective areas
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Ensure safety training and resources to workers and subcontractors to mitigate risks and prevent accidents or incidents.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements on-site for all contractors.
Development of integrated, cross-functional Project Execution Plan (PEP) in line with the company's associated standards, including:
- Scope definition (Detailed work breakdown structure)
- Execution Strategy
- Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning and Operational Readiness plans
- Detailed Schedule and Estimate
- Project Controls and Change Management plans
- Risk, Quality and S&SD plans
- Stakeholder and Communication plans
- Close-out Plan
Project Set-up for success, including:
- Alignment on roles and responsibilities with senior leadership and client (operations)
- Performance orientated agreements with external partners
- Shapes the project safety initiatives and reward and recognition programs including personal involvement in recognition opportunities
- Sets and holds each member of the project team accountable for achieving Safety targets (e.g: VFL, HPH, HRWV, CCM< etc.))
- Establishment of project controls aligned to execution strategy
- Delineation of controls responsibilities to ensure owner interests are sufficiently protected
- Alignment on roles and responsibilities with all team members
- Understanding of expectations of all influential external stakeholders
- Adjusts the project safety program for feedback from project safety trends revealed by leading indicators
Resource Allocation:
- Assess resource requirements, including manpower, equipment, and materials, based on the scope of construction activities and project schedule.
- Coordinate with procurement teams to ensure timely acquisition and delivery of materials and equipment needed for construction.
- Optimize resource allocation to balance the demands of construction activities with the need to maintain production levels at the processing plant.
Ensure transparent reporting of progress supported by:
- QA of the data collection process
- Analysis and interpretation of root cause of variance
- Remedial actions to rectify or alternatively substantiated forecasted impact to the project
Effective leadership and management of cross-functional team to deliver project against objectives as defined in the project charter and in line with the the company's values:
- Drives and verifies the documented risk assessment process from the project/business level down to construction safety
- Reinforces the Zero Harm objectives of the project through being present at safety inductions and site prestart and tool box meetings
- Participates in all project safety incident investigations, leading when appropriate
- Holds responsible persons accountable for completion of safety actions before due date
- Implements root cause identification and behaviour modification in preference to disciplinary action
Risk Management:
- Identify potential risks and uncertainties impacting project schedule, cost, or quality.
- Develop risk mitigation strategies to address identified risks, such as developing contingency plans or implementing proactive measures to prevent potential issues.
- Monitor and assess risks throughout the project lifecycle, adjusting strategies to minimise their impact on project outcomes.
Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC):
- Establish QA/QC processes to monitor and evaluate construction activities, ensuring workmanship, materials, and installations meet required standards.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits to verify compliance with engineering specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards.
- Implement corrective actions to address deviations from quality requirements and prevent rework or defects
Cost Control:
- Monitor project expenditures against the established budget, tracking costs associated with labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
- Identify cost savings and optimisation opportunities without compromising project quality or safety.
- Implement measures to prevent cost overruns, such as monitoring resource utilisation, negotiating favourable contracts, or implementing value engineering solutions.
- Compiling of documentation and presenting to approval bodies as and when required to get approval for cost changes
Schedule Management:
- Develop and maintain a detailed project schedule, identifying critical path activities and key milestones.
- Monitor progress against the schedule, identifying potential delays or deviations and taking proactive measures to address them.
- Coordinate with project teams and stakeholders to ensure timely project milestones and deliverables completion.
- Compiling of documentation and presenting to approval bodies as and when required to get approval for schedule changes
People Management:
- Facilitate regular performance assessments by collaborating with colleagues across the project and providing constructive feedback to support everyone's professional growth.
