About the position

Background: 

  • The Health Justice Initiative (HJI) is a South African non-profit organisation working to address systemic health inequities and injustices in South Africa and beyond
  • Founded in mid-2020 in response to the massive inequalities in public health exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, HJI also focuses on the intersections between health justice, racial and gender inequity, and climate injustice, while continuing to work directly on issues of health policy

Main purpose of the job:

  • Lead and Manage HIV prevention initiatives with a strong focus on advocacy to influence public policy and expand access to prevention services

Type: One year Fixed Term Contract

Location:


  • Cape Town (Hybrid working)

Key performance areas:

  • Co-ordinate existing HJI led HIV prevention initiatives, including timelines and deliverables
  • Coordinate campaign work and where needed, community engagement
  • Support HJI's advocacy strategies by contributing coordination, research, legal and policy expertise to projects
  • Coordinate and prepare communication materials (pamphlets, social media, radio, etc.) to promote prevention strategies, policies and methods
  • Translate relevant legislation, policies and protocols into advocacy tools such as fact sheets, op-eds, and infographics
  • Engage in local and national advocacy to improve access to HIV prevention services
  • Work with campaign partners to develop policy briefs, submissions, and advocacy messages based on community evidence and rights-based frameworks
  • Build relationships with government departments (e.g., Department of Health, SANAC), and civil society networks here and abroad
  • Coordinate timelines, deliverables, and administrative aspects of research and advocacy projects
  • Work with civil society coalitions, community-based organizations, academics, and international partners to promote equitable policy outcomes
  • Represent the HJI at forums, conferences, and workshops to build networks and promote collaboration (where required)

Required minimum education and training:

  • Degree in Public Health, Social Science, Development Studies, or related field

Required minimum work experience:

  • 5 years’ experience coordinating health-related projects, preferably in HIV
  • Understanding of South Africa’s HIV epidemic and policy environment
  • Experience working with human rights, legal and health research methodologies and organisations
  • Demonstrated knowledge across and understand key issues in the following areas: Health Rights; Human Rights and Public Sector Governance; Legislative and Regulatory processes; Community Engagement; Medicine Access

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Experience in health rights advocacy in the fields of HIV/AIDS/TB
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is an advantage
  • Team player, ability to work in a small team remotely, self-motivated
  • Willingness to travel locally and at times abroad
